2 p.m. October 26, 2019
At Portage United Church of Christ
You are invited to “The Reason Why We Sing”, a lecture-recital advocating for the intentional inclusion of Black-American sacred music in our places of faith and school and community music programs. This program also intends to serve as a medium to address the historically exclusive and repressive actions and ideas that continue to prevent the inclusion of this music along with European and American musical art forms. We believe that music can promote racial healing, and serve as a bridge for expression and connection between people. With this idea, we hope that this program (which includes notable local African-American musicians and educators) will provide understanding and context to the valuable importance and need for preservation of Black-American sacred music at all levels of programming and historical education in the greater Kalamazoo area. Funding is provided by the Kalamazoo Community Foundation and Fetzer Institute Fund.
